I approach art therapy with a mixture of interest in science, art, human development, and spirituality. I am curious in how the brain functions and the consequent effects this has on creativity. I am interested in how we grow as humans and the stages we collectively proceed through together, and I am interested in everything we can't see; how emotions are transferred between people without saying a word, how rituals can heal us, and how drawing a picture can express everything we didn't consciously know we were feeling.

I first discovered the natural healing ability of art while studying fine arts. During this time I was directing a school aged childcare program and volunteering at Children's Hospital, using therapeutic play to help children cope with the stress of hospital procedures. I continued my studies, majoring in psychology and human development. While studying, I worked at Eureka Art School, an art school for individuals with developmental disabilities, and in the art studio at George Pearson Centre with individuals who had experienced traumatic brain injuries. My thesis research during my postgraduate training in art therapy was with adults with developmental disabilities and the challenges in implementing art therapy with these clients. It was with these non-verbal clients that I witnessed magic: moments of profound silence, where clients who were previously not able to make connections did. It is because of these experiences that I believe that art therapy can facilitate each person's ability to access their own healing potential.

I will soon be updating a new art therapy blog, so check back for updates.
