Making images is a natural human endeavour, one that we began as children as a way of communicating and exploring our world.

As children progress into adolescence the quest becomes the perfection of a realistic image and perspective drawing. This is often the stage that individuals stop drawing. The dissatisfaction with the inability to achieve this level of perfection combined the more developed power of language, leaves words as the preferred method of communication. Some individuals continue to perfect their graphic ability and it is with these well-publicized “artists” that adults compare their artistic abilities with. But art therapy is not about the well-developed artist, but rather the previous stages of communication. It is during these stages that we as individuals learned how to act, what to expect, how to love, how to relate and how to express our feelings….. this all happened while language acquisition was being perfected. This kind of therapy can have surprising results for some adults, as with age we often forget the transformative nature of making an image and the healing ability in making the invisible visible.
